The expert team at Wasserman Ulitsky Dermatology wants to help you love your skin you’re in! We’ve dedicated this blog to the topic of exfoliation, which is something you can add to your skincare routine for fresh, healthy looking skin. So, what exactly is exfoliation? Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells, which are on the surface of the skin. If you’re not happy with your skin because it looks dull, rough and dry, you should exfoliate your skin regularly. A regular exfoliating routine will leave your skin looking fresh and healthy so you can love your skin again!
Why Exfoliation is Important
Your skin is continually generating new cells at the lower dermis layer wherein they move to up to the epidermis or top layer. As these cells rise to the surface, the gradually die and fill with keratin. While these keratin-filled skin cells help protect the skin, they are constantly sloughing off to make way for younger cells. As we age, this process of cell turnover slows down. Skin cells begin to pile up on the skin’s surface in which the skin dries out, roughens and looks dull and listless. Exfoliation removes these dead cells to reveal the healthier, younger cells underneath.
How to Exfoliate at Home
Exfoliating your skin is easy. Simply use a nylon exfoliating cloth or pad along with some gentle exfoliating cleanser. Put some of the exfoliating cleanser on the dampened cloth and gently scrub your skin in a circular motion. Don’t scrub too hard as a light touch is all that’s necessary to slough off the dead skin cells. Then rinse your skin with lukewarm water and pat it dry with a soft towel and apply an anti-aging moisturizing lotion to help hold moisture in.
Be sure not to over-exfoliate and especially during the summer months or in very sunny climates as doing so can make your skin more vulnerable to sun damage. And don’t use body scrubs on the face as they’re too rough. Instead, use an exfoliating product that’s formulated specifically for the face.
How Often Should I Exfoliate?
If you exfoliate too often, it can leave your skin dry, irritated and damaged. Limit your exfoliation routine to one or two times per week. Signs that you may be over-exfoliating include dryer than normal skin or skin that’s irritated.
