At Wasserman Ulitsky Dermatology, we want you to love your skin and treat it right! As you age, the appearance of your skin can change as early as your 30’s or by later in mid-life, depending upon your habits. While you cannot control some factors that can lead to your skin aging, there are many things you can do to help slow down the effects aging has on your skin. Here are some helpful anti-aging skincare tips to keep your skin looking young.
While you may expect our Venice dermatologists to only talk about skincare products and techniques, keeping your skin younger looking starts with the nutrients it receives from the foods you eat. As your body’s largest organ, your skin needs to be properly nourished. You should steer clear of processed foods and foods high in sugar as they promote inflammation, which is a process that damages the normal production of skin cells. Focus on eating a healthy, well-balanced diet rich in vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids that are foods that all promote healthy, glowing skin.
When you expose your skin to the sun, the harmful rays damage elastin and cause a loss of collagen that results in sagging skin and wrinkles. The sun also can roughen your skin and make it become discolored. Last but certainly not least is the fact that UV rays are the main cause of skin cancer that can be a deadly disease if not caught early. It’s important to wear sunscreen (with a SPF of at least 30) every day and avoid excessive sun exposure.
Smoking damages elastin and causes a loss of collagen, which causes the skin to sag. It also causes wrinkles around the mouth and lips so kick the habit once and for all. Drinking alcohol can damage the blood vessels in the skin that can lead to loose, unhealthy looking skin. As a diuretic, alcohol also depletes the skin of Vitamin C, which is necessary for plump and healthy skin so try to drink alcohol in moderation.
It’s important to take care of your skin day and night. After your morning shower, apply a good quality moisturizer to your skin. Your skin is exposed to all types of pollutants all day long, which breaks down collagen and can cause damage. Before going to bed, remove all makeup and wash your face with a gentle cleanser and then moisturize and be sure to sleep on a clean pillow.
