When Should I See a Dermatologist?

June 1, 2016

Taking good care of your skin and treating various skin problems that occur can be challenging to say the least since your skin is your largest organ covering your entire body. Thankfully, whether it’s dry skin, oily skin, acne or wrinkles, most skin problems are relatively easy to take care of yourself using everyday over-the-counter skincare products. However, not all problems with your skin can be resolved without the help of your local Venice & Englewood, FL dermatologist.

If you are unsure if your skin-care concern is something to contact your dermatologist about, here are some signs indicating that you should indeed schedule that appointment with your dermatologist.

Stubborn Acne That Won’t Clear Up

If you have cystic acne or very stubborn acne that does not improve using over-the-counter products, you should contact your dermatologist at your convenience. Most non-prescription acne products containing benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid work quite well at controlling mild and moderate cases of acne if used consistently used over a period of two to three months. But if this type of product is not working for you, a dermatologist has many effective prescription acne treatment options available that can help bring your acne under control.

Dark Areas On Your Skin That Bleed, Won’t Go Away or Change

If you notice a mole or other unusual skin discoloration that is starting to change, grow, darken or bleed, it is imperative that you schedule an appointment with a dermatologist immediately because it could be skin cancer. People at increased risk for skin cancer are fair-skinned people and those who regularly expose their skin to the sun wherein they tan and burn frequently. Even if you don’t fit these criteria, you still need to be examined by a dermatologist to ensure your skin is safe and not at risk for skin cancer.

Rashes That Linger

If you have a red, itchy or irritating rash that won’t go away even after using over-the-counter products, you should contact the team at Wasserman Ulitsky Dermatology. Eczema and other skin conditions often cause inflammation, persistent itching, irritation, flaking and red skin. Your dermatologist can diagnose your skin condition and then provide you with an effective prescription-based oral or topical medication to help relieve your symptoms.

Psoriasis or Other Skin Conditions That Won’t Heal

If you’re suffering from psoriasis, chronic seborrhea or another skin disorder that won’t heal and which worsens, you could definitely benefit from seeing a dermatologist. Most over-the-counter skincare products for stubborn and hard-to-treat skin problems like psoriasis and seborrhea are simply not very effective at providing the needed relief to keep these types of skin problems under control.
